Day 4 – Laredo to Solpena – 39 miles

On the way back from dinner last night we discovered that we could have had a nice warm shower had we used the new toilet block, not the one that was meant to be out of use. I did think at the time it looked a bit of a mess ! Tim is still speaking to me, so I think I got away with that one..

Early start meant wheels rolling at 0845, gentle warm up through the town, just in time to hit our first hill. 140m climb at gradients of 7-10%. The reward stunning views of Laredo.

Then followed succession of similar climbs and descents, with no flats, but great scenery.

Finally around 11 rolled into Castro Urdiales for a late breakfast, bought at local supermarket and eaten in the market square.

Then after a break, predictably a huge hill to slog up !

Followed by yet another brutal hill, tipping out a 11%. Then a marginally less hilly ride into the suburbs of Bilbao and my first ever ride on a transporter bridge.

After that a relatively easy ride into the suburbs along some of Bilbao’s cycleways.

Camping In Solpena and resting before another slog. We were greeted at the campsite by an empty reception. Eventually someone turned up to check us and an ever growing crowd in. First he made a Dutch couple do an impossible manoeuvre to park their car, then he proceeded to stomp into the office and give us a full Basil Fawlty display when the computer wouldn’t work. I thought he would break the printer he slammed it so hard. Anyway drama over. Apart from cold showers again ! Tent up then dinner.
