Day 18 – Montreuil-Bellay to Montreuil-Juigné – 49 miles

Woken in the early hours by rain on the tent, had a sense of foreboding about the morning. In fact there was more gentle rain, but opening the tent around 6 in the morning revealed a dry but very overcast day. Fingers were crossed for a bit of sun as we packed up later, it’s strong enough here that 30 mins would be enough to dry off most of the tent.

Giving the near biblical deluge we had, I think we both got off lightly. The inner tent stayed pretty dry, all though some damp seemed to come up from below. ( The strange looking contraption on the left is my exped chair kit – a very comfortable sleeping pad, that converts into an equally comfy chair)

We were going for a leisurely start, as pastries are delivered around 8.30, one of the big worries I had was getting milk for my morning tea. I’d been using Tesco’s dried milk powder, which worked ok if you premixed a little in the cup before adding the teabag and more hot water – once that ran out, we found a good French alternative.

The rain didn’t hold off so we packed up the damp kit and made our way to Saumur and then along quiet roads towards Gennes, passing lots of little chateau along the way.

Picnic benches were put to good use at our coffee stop, drying all the gear.

From then on we dodged showers and thunderstorms, hiding in a few bus shelters along the way. A very easy route through the centre of Angers saw us head off towards the Mayenne River and our campsite at Montreuil-Juigne.

This was a municipal site, with a large covered area to cook and eat in.

All for €5.20 each. Financial probity returns ! Nice evening views as well.
