Day 5 – Berlikum to Moddergat 72km

A pretty uneventful day, and shorter than I would have liked, but dictated by availability of accommodation. Finding somewhere to stay has been an issue this week ( turns out it’s a traditional holiday week for the Dutch).

Following on from yesterday’s theme of poor camouflage, I spotted this as I left the very pretty village of Berlikum. Most radio amateurs keep their antennas discreet in built up areas, and in fact in U.K. are subject to strict planning rules. Obviously not the case in the Netherlands

Todays ride was mainly through farmland, sometimes hugging the dyke walls, but no views of the sea, despite this being labelled the coastal route. No tulips either, but a nice selection of windmills

Some of the cycle paths and roads are very pretty

Unfortunately the land along the dykes is used for grazing animals – no space is left unused here. It provides some pretty pictures but not so pretty paths

Finally a food update – I’ve taken my healthy eating to new levels, Kipperling for lunch (I’d no idea what it was, guy selling it didn’t speak English, but I was hungry so ordered some. Turns out it was fried fish ! Obviously apple pie and cream for a mid afternoon dessert. For dinner as there were no restaurants/cafes near the B&B, I did opt for a relatively healthy supermarket salad and fruit and yoghurt for dinner. Washed down with a beer !
