Day 7 – Vries to Coeverden- 92km

Early ish breakfast and hit the road, as last check in at the hotel tonight was 1700 and I didn’t want to risk missing it. Vries was like a ghost town when I left at 8.30.

Todays ride took me mainly through woodland , at least until lunch. After a couple of hours I decided to take a break at a bench conveniently near some ancient graves.

What I didn’t realise until I sat down and turned around was the great view behind me.

This trip would have been a birdwatchers delight, after all the sea/water birds, today it was a stork. On top of it’s purpose built nesting pole.

Theme for today has to be things that block or almost block your path, from Geese, Mammoths and Tractors. The tractor a 1950s John Deere has been abandoned by its ZZ top look a like owner after breaking down on one of his Sunday tractor rides.

Not too much else to say about today, more beautiful scenery and tree lined tracks. Getting to be a bit routine. However my afternoon coffee was a bit sobering. I pulled up at a handy bench and noticed about 20metres away a little stone memorial. Turns out on close inspection, the ground behind was Coeverden’s Jewish cemetery, dating back a couple of hundred years. The memorial was to the local Jews who were deported and killed in WW2. Of the small population of 17, 14 perished.

Cracking on, I made the hotel in good time. A bit of luxury for me on a Sunday night. They even rolled out the red carpet and provided a special room for Surly

Food update – huge grilled chicken sandwich for lunch. Dinner will be burger and chips In the town square when it turns up. I’ve managed to do this blog while I wait !

UPDATE: It’s finally arrived. Now I need another beer !
