Day 11 – Bronkhorst- Arnhem 37km

After a great night’s sleep, fantastic buffet breakfast and a not too unreasonable hotel bill, I set off quite late, from Bronkhorst. The first surprise awaited me just around the corner. The road disappeared. I could see where it started again, the other side of the river. Fortunately there was a cable ferry to get me and the waiting car across, all for the princely sum of €1.50

Today’s ride was always going to be short, as I wanted to stay in Arnhem. It passed through the oldest of the Netherlands national parks the Veluwezoom. It’s notable for the fact it has hills, in fact by Dutch standards, big hills. Topping out at 110m, it also had lots of wildlife.

As I had the time, I was quite happy to linger here and take any hills slowly. As soon as I hit the park I was into woodland and hills, it didn’t take me long to spot wildlife either !

All this excitement called for a break. Happily a cafe appeared en route. I felt it was a sign, so stopped off there.

After the cafe stop there was a mix of wooded areas and open heathland. Must have done 25 km plus on cycle tracks with only crossing a couple of roads.

Then it was into town, very odd to be in a busy city. Came across a great sculpture, called the spitting leaders. These two are Stalin and Franco.

From then it was on to an Air BnB, my home for the next two nights. Time to catch up on washing and plan next few days
