End of the Road

I decided that given the outstanding issues with the bike, especially the split tyre carcass which could lead to a very nasty accident, it probably makes sense to spend the final two days sightseeing on foot and generally relaxing. Not a bad idea when facing three weeks of school work when I get back !

So today was given over to sightseeing, again making that familiar journey from Tavira to Faro. I’ve become a seasoned traveler now on CP railways – despite all the journeys I’ve taken I still haven’t spend £20 !

Faro station

I’ll miss that bustling transport hub that is Faro station ! Anyway Faro itself is definitely worth a short visit. I just wandered around the old town, stopped for the proverbial Pastel da Nata and a quick lunch.

The one attraction that apparently was worth a visit lay with the Church of our Third Lady of Monte de Carmo. A quite impressive church on the edge of town.

Like most visitors I wasn’t here to admire the admittedly impressive interior. My interest was in a small chapel housed in the church’s gardens. The Capela dos Ossos de Faro, was built using the remains of Carmalite monks and featured over 1000 skulls. I had assumed the skulls were set in amongst small cobbles, it was only when looking at the photos later I realised they weren’t cobbles but bones !

After a short visit I was quite pleased to get back out into the sunshine. A bit more strolling and Faro was done. As probably is the blog until the next trip, the planning for which will no doubt start soon.
