Wind & Hills

Early start this morning as the ferry was docking at 0715. Despite that it was an hour later we rolled into a damp and deserted St Malo. We managed to find one of the few patisseries that was open and I treated myself to a large local pastry “Kouign-amann’ just think stodgy pastry covered in caramel and a coffee. Then a short wait for another ferry across the bay, before cycling proper started.

From then on it was a series of climbs and descents, mostly manageable along a series of spectacular bays, with a bit of woodland and farmland thrown in. Rain was never far away, but we avoided it, less easy to avoid was the constant strong headwind, which I suspect will be with us until the end of this week.

Lunch was at another patisserie, a healthy tuna sandwich for me (no Greggs on this trip) then onwards. We wanted to see Cap Fréhel before heading south again to find a campsite. Needless to say the wind at the Cap was brutal.

Once we had had our fill of the views , we headed off pausing after an hour to find a campsite online. Fortunately we easily found one only 7km away, so off we went. Everything was going swimmingly until we headed off down a gravel/sand track which was dissected by a couple of small streams. We had a choice, to double back and make a huge detour, or wade the stream and get to the campsite which was now a tantalising 1.5km away . We tried pushing the bike through the first stream but it was too hard work fully loaded, so we ditched half the bags and then made the crossing, returning to pick them up. Them apart from a short push through deep sand, we were on our way.

Another 10 mins or so amd we made the campsite. No tents for us tonight though. We splashed out on a cabin with roof rerrace and sea views. €45 well spent, especially as the rain hit later.

Finally we rounded off the evening with a healthy dinner in the camp bar !

Tomorrow more of the same probably !
