Last night we made the decision to head South today and then tomorrow continue heading West inland. The hope was that the winds would be less brutal. Rain was forecast again so we made an early start.
As usual it was very hilly at least up until lunchtime. We made much better progress today, hitting an early lunch stop at half distance. We still had time to appreciate our first corrugated iron bus stops though.

Lunch was in a service station, but being France it was a little better than the UK offerings. Ham in freshly baked bread with lashings of butter followed up with a delicious apricot flan. At 14€ for the two of us including our drinks it wasn’t bad.

One common theme in most cycling tours i’ve done is the appearance of a long uphill immediately after lunch. Not today though, we had 4km of silky smooth tarmac, all ever so slightly down hill. In fact for the rest of the afternoon, the hills were longer but gentler.
We were now cycling through farmland with the odd trail thrown in. The weather for the most part was sunny, but we could see heavy rain nearby.

With 7km to go, we hit the Nantes- Brest canal, which would provide an almost flat route to Pontivy, our stop for the night. It looked lovely in the sun, maybe not so good when we had to hide from the rain.

Pontivy itself was very pretty, we managed to get a deal at the local hostel, as long as we paid a 2€ membership fee, so we are now fully signed up members of the French Youth hosteling system.

Next on the agenda, a proper lunch in town and some route planning,
I am sure you went to France as they don’t ‘do’ veg! Views through the rain still look good.
