We’re off – oop North !

So my delayed cycle tour “Up North” is finally kicking off. I’m meeting up with my David my fellow tourer at a campsite near Hexham today, with the tour proper kicking off tomorrow. To my shame I’m driving up there, as I can’t face the stress of trying to get the fully loaded touring bike on a LNER train, with bike storage that is almost impossible to use. The car will be left at the first campsite and hopefully still be there on our return.

Rather than face a 6hr plus drive today, I left yesterday and broke the journey halfway in God’s own county, in the luxurious setting of a Holiday Inn in Doncaster ! The start was not auspicious with torrential rain for much of the journey. The local news was predicting a heatwave later in the week, so I shall look forward to the temperature climbing above 10c !

The good news is that being Yorkshire the natives are very friendly and they serve proper breakfasts. I started healthy but then moved to the full fry

Healthy, but prepared for the fry

I did try and finish off with a round of pastries, but the only thing on offer were some tired croissants. I guess pastries aren’t a big thing up here. I shouldn’t be surprised, it’s always taken a while for folk to adopt to foreign foods. When I was a kid up here there was no pasta and olive oil came from the chemists and was for warming and putting in your ear for earache.

Further updates may be few and far between as we will be off grid for most of the time conserving battery power.
